One of the main research areas of PHI is the Ancient Near East, i.e. the study of the ancient civilizations of the Middle East region – such as the literature and culture preserved in Sumerian, Akkadian, Hittite, Old Egyptian, Old Iranian, Hebrew, Ugaritic and a host of other languages.

Currently, the following projects and activites at PHI belong to this research area:

  • Cuneiform Multilinguals

  • Dependent Languages

  • Research Seminars in Sumerian, Akkadian and Old Persian

  • Sumerian courses

  • Hebrew courses

For more information about these and other projects, go to the PHI project page, seminar page and course page

The Norwegian Institute of Philology will publish more comprehensive information about this research area in due course.
